WHEN IT COMES TO FASHION, THE WORLDS OF MUSIC AND movies are in different universes. Musicians adhere to their personal styles above all else, making the red carpets for the likes of the Grammys or the VMAs more erratic than anything the Oscars have to offer. Björk was not the only celeb attending because of her inclusion in the original song category who tested the boundaries of Oscar style. Here are some others.

CELINE DION

(1998)

What do you wear when the movie you’re representing contains what is possibly one of the most iconic pieces of jewelry of all time? That piece of jewelry, of course. Celine Dion, known for her outré fashion, went simple when it came time to sing “My Heart Will Go On” from Titanic at the 1997 awards. Dion was not actually nominated for an Oscar for “My Heart Will Go On,” given that she did not write it. She was just there to perform. She had two black dresses. One with a V-neck for the red carpet, another with a turtleneck for the performance. But the true star was the $2.2 million replica of the Heart of the Ocean sapphire from the film sitting on her neck like a searchlight. Inspired by the film, it was designed by the jeweler Asprey & Garrard and encrusted with diamonds. The next year she could dress as goofily as her heart desired, and she did, wearing a white backward John Galliano tux and a fedora.
